Cub Scouts host day camp in Sussex County

DELAWARE – Summer camps are still going on and one just wrapped up this week in Georgetown. Sussex District Scouting America hosted a day camp at Sussex Academy.

Dennis Redington is the Sussex District Day Camp Program Director and says he is glad this camp is in session. “It’s an opportunity for us to give back to the community… We have handy crafts, we have cooking, we do scout crafts which is things like orienteering., knots how to set up a tent, and do things in the woods… We do STEM, every day, so they have science and nature and opportunity for kids to just get outside and do some stuff they normally wouldn’t have a chance to do.”

There were many active children at the camp. 7-year-old Macyn Lewis says she has a great time fishing and playing and can’t wait until next year. “Every year, it is super fun, because we get to do a lot of stuff here, and, I just really like it.”

He says that due to COVID, numbers have decreased and he’s glad is taking off in Sussex. “So, this year, staff and kids, we got over 150 people here which we’ve almost tripled the number we were about 10 ears ago, we were in the 50’s and 60′ so it’s good to see that day camp and cub scouts has started really take a hold in the Sussex district.”

Camp officials say that just because this camp is over, don’t lose hope there are plenty of day camps that haven’t happened yet. They say Cub Scouts is open and available to both boys and girls, and to check their website for more details.
