BETHANY BEACH, Del. – An ongoing project in a Bethany Beach neighborhood has left community members questioning the town’s planning.

Bethany beach is in the last phases of its multi-month project, adding walking and biking lanes to Collins Street.

While the idea is to promote safety for pedestrians, Jennifer Carter said it’s actually doing quite the opposite for residents.

“It’s disappointing because we don’t want it anyway,” Carter said. “Even one of the guys working on the project said, ‘You know, a bigger road means you can go faster.’ I go, ‘Yup! We’ve said this from the beginning.”

Constant noise and rumbling and a lack of mobility have been some of the biggest issues for homeowners.
During construction hours, Carter, and neighbor, Laura Irwin said getting to and from their driveways can be hit or miss.

“We’re all kind of captive through this whole thing, to some extent,” Carter said.

“We knew this was going to be happening and we weren’t really given any alternatives where we could park, so we came to the mindset, once we get here, our cars have to stay,” Irwin added.

With an expected end date of June 14th, Carter has a message for those who will be frequenting Collins Street, to do so with caution.

“Please be careful, please. This is not going to keep you safe; you’ve still got to be aware of what’s in front of you,” Carter said. “Don’t be on your phone, walking or riding your bike down the street.”
