Burn bans issued in multiple counties as heat wave approaches
WICOMICO COUNTY – Wicomico County has issued a burn ban effective Thursday at noon.
The ban is a precautionary measure due to current, and forecasted, heat and dry conditions. During the ban all outdoor burning is prohibited, except for grilling, recreational campfires, and professional fireworks. If you do decide to set a campfire it must be monitored at all times, and it should be drowned and completely extinguished when you’re finished.
Officials say that there are simple steps you can take to protect your home from fire hazards: “Clean up debris, rake up debris from your yard, out around your house. Try to keep a five foot area around your house that’s free of leaf collections, or sticks, and dispose of them properly,” said Salisbury Fire Department Chief Rob Frampton.
The ban is in effect for a full week in Wicomico County, until June 27th. Officials say it’s possible that it could be extended if weather conditions don’t change.
Somerset County also issued a burn ban today, saying that residents will be notified when it is lifted.
