The Society of St. Andrew acknowledges World Hunger Day

MARYLAND – World Hunger Day was founded in 2011 to call attention to the global food crisis.  Feeding American reports, that 44 million people face hunger in the U.S. This includes more than 13 million children. Locally, the Maryland Food Bank reports that 1 in 3 Marylanders are facing food insecurity.

Jean Siers is Delmarva’s Regional Director for The Society of St. Andrew, one of the many organizations aimed to fight the hunger crisis in the area. She says they approach the hunger issue differently in that they are about preventing food waste and getting nutritious food to people in the community who need it.

She says, “About 40% of fresh fruits and vegetables in this country go to waste somewhere in the food system and at the same time, you got probably 40% of folks in any given community on the shore that don’t have enough money or live close enough to a full-service grocery store to have access to the nutritious foods that they need for their families to lead healthy lives… I think a lot of people in the community don’t see the need around them… We think that if people are working hard, that they have everything they need to feed themselves and their families. A day like this is just a really good opportunity for people to hear about what’s going on in the community,

The Society of St. Andrew works with local farmers in the area to reduce waste and keep bellies full everywhere.
