Sussex Central makes it back to DIAA Softball Title Game; Golden Knight’s 3rd Championship Appearance in 4 Years
GEORGETOWN, Del. – Sussex Central defeats Cape Henlopen 7-2 in the DIAA State Semifinal Game to head back to the championship game for the third time in four seasons. The Golden Knights only led by one heading into the bottom of faith but would score three runs in the frame to blow the game wide open.
Sussex Central’s Madge Layfield led the way on the mound with ten strikeouts and a two-run home run.
The Golden Knights have been knocking at the door, waiting for their chance to capture the elusive DIAA softball state title. They made the championship game in 2021 and 2022, losing both times to Caravel.
After the game, Layfield and Golden Knight Shortstop Makyla Davis talked about capping their senior years with a state title.
“I think just being patient went well with us today, we weren’t jumping on first-pitch strikes, we were making her work the count and making her pitch as many pitches as she gets so I think that really helped us today. I’m just happy that we have another redemption shot. Just being a senior, I love this team so I’m just glad I get to play with them one more time,” Davis said.
“I’m beyond excited, this is the goal coming into this year! I think our biggest thing is going to be is not letting our nerves get to us. Today, before the game we were really kind of nervous, some of the underclassmen were so the next game is where we’re going to let the nerves go,” Layfield said.
