Salisbury wins CLC Conference Title; Gulls earn 1st Round Bye in NCAA Tournament
SALISBURY, Md.- The Salisbury Sea Gulls Men’s Lacrosse Team beat the Christopher Newport Captains 14-7 to claim the CLC Conference Championship.
They jumped out to a 7-0 run to take this game over in the first half and the gulls kept a seven-goal lead for the rest of the game. Salisbury was up 10-3 at halftime and CNU would never be able to get within striking distance.
The Gulls would only score four goals in the second half, but their defense was a big factor in this game, causing 11 turnovers and scooping up 11 more groundballs than the Captains.
CNU outscored the Gulls 2-1 in the 3rd quarter but Brice Bromwell, Ty Keaton, and Luke Nestor each scored goals that helped SU keep a healthy distance from CNU.
The Gulls haven’t lost a conference title game since 2016.
They make their 35th consecutive and 41st overall NCAA Tournament. They have a bye and host the second and third rounds starting next Saturday, May 11, they face the winner of a first-round matchup between Saint Joseph (Conn.) and SUNY Poly in the second round.
Gulls Attack and CLC Player of The Year Jude Brown says the team is unsatisfied with just the conference championship.
“It’s always a good battle between us and CNU. But for us and our team and what it means, it solidifies that we get home-field advantage for the NCAA moving forward. I think that gives us an advantage, especially being able to host a game and having them come to us and us not traveling for the games. The job is not done, here’s it’s a little bit different than a lot of other places, getting to the conference championship is usually the goal but here it’s a national championship so while it is fun and awesome to have this accomplishment. All eyes are on Memorial Day Weekend,” he says.
