New law targets illegal street racing

MARYLAND,- A new law is targeting illegal street racing in Maryland – and will go into effect on June 1st.

Governor Wes Moore recently signed Senate Bill 442 which will change certain penalties for motor vehicle violations related to street racing.

These new penalties will include mandatory court appearances, up to a year in jail, and a doubling of fines to $1000.

Triple A spokesperson Ragina Ali says that this new law will help hold everyone involved accountable.

“Putting more teeth in the law giving police better tools to actually address the crimes and certainly increasing fines and penalties for anyone who wants to be involved in illegal street racing even if you’re not racing but participating in holding a flag or something, “Says Ragina.

This is the first law that is being enforced for street racing statewide.

Towns like Ocean City have already had their own laws in place before this.
