Man indicted on murder charges stemming from March fatal hit-and-run of construction worker in Salisbury

SALISBURY, Md. – A Somerset County man has been indicted on murder charges following a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a utility worker back in March.

At around 10:30 a.m. on March 27th, an off-duty Maryland State Police trooper was driving his marked department vehicle south on Airport Road, next to the Salisbury Regional Airport, where he stopped at a work zone where a flagging operation was in effect. Workers at the time were allowing northbound traffic to proceed. Preliminary investigation revealed that Jamal Scarborough was driving a blue Jeep in front of the trooper’s vehicle when he swerved into the northbound lane to try and pass the work zone. He then swerved back into the southbound lanes to avoid oncoming traffic before driving off the road and into a ditch.

It was determined through the preliminary investigation that Scarborough accelerated his vehicle and ran over a worker, identified as 64-year-old Thomas Attix. Attix was taken by ambulance to TidalHealth Peninsula Regional before being flown by private helicopter to Christiana Hospital for treatment. He died from his injuries on April 2nd.

The off-duty trooper and additional troopers chased Scarborough briefly through Airport Road, Route 12, and Nutters Cross Road before arresting him in a field near Johnson Road.

Scarborough was indicted last week by a Wicomico County Grand Jury on second degree murder, first degree assault, negligent vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent vehicular manslaughter, failure to return/remain at an accident involving death, failure of driver to render assistance to the injured, driving on a revoked license, and related charges. He is still being held without bail.
