Heatstroke Awareness Event

GEORGETOWN, Del. – The Delaware Office of Highway Safety (OHS) is partnering with the DMV to educate the public about the risks of heatstroke.

The OHS will be holding public demonstrations with cars equipped with thermometers. These demonstrations will show how fast temperatures can rise inside of a car. OHS Child Passenger Safety Coordinator Aubrey Klick said that temperatures in your car will spike, regardless of whether you have your windows cracked.

“These cars are actually heating up on average about 19 degrees within 10 minutes. That’s a lot. If it’s already 80 degrees outside, you’re at almost 100 degrees after just 10 minutes,” Klick said.

Klick added that small kids are more vulnerable to heatstroke in the car not just because they often can’t get out of the car themselves, but because, according to Klick, the bodies of children overheat 5 to 6 times faster than those of adults.

The public event will take place at the Georgetown DMV on May 22nd, from 3-5 pm.
