Family of Camay De Silva relieved after arrests were made in connection to DSU Homicide

DOVER, Del. – It’s now been two weeks since the shooting that claimed 18-year-old Camay De Silva’s life on the Delaware State University campus.
Now, police are shedding some light on the investigation.
“The Dover Police Department is announcing the arrest of Destry Jones age, 20, and Damien Hinson, age 18, both of Dover, for the murder of Camay Mitchell De Silva,” Dover Chief of Police, Thomas Johnson said.
Johnson said both suspects were involved in a fight with two other men on campus. At the time, Camay was visiting a friend on campus. When shots rang out nearby, a stray bullet struck her.
“Officers responded there and located Camay suffering from a gunshot wound to her head,” Chief Johnson said.
Almost two weeks after Camay was killed, both men were arrested. Jones found in New York, and Hinson at a shopping center in Dover.
Now, each face the same slew of charges: 1 Count of Murder in the First Degree, 2 Counts of Attempted Murder in the First Degree, 1 Count of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, 1 Count of Possession of a Firearm by a Person Prohibited and 1 Count of Conspiracy in the First Degree.
While neither suspect was a DSU student, President, Dr. Tony Allen, said the incident is a part of a bigger gun violence issue.
“Let me say this clearly, on April 21st, gun violence touched all of us, as it has on too many campuses and too many communities across this country. It’s not enough for us to just accept this unfortunate reality, we must be vigilante,” Dr. Allen said.
Still reeling from the loss, Camay’s other, Shanelle De Silva, had a message for the accused.
“I hope that they can live with what they did, because they made a stupid choice that’s going to affect their life,” De Silva said. “They took someone that had nothing to do with what was going on with them, and their senseless choices affected a whole lot of people.’
And it’s clear Camay was someone that won’t quickly be forgotten.
“We want to keep that love [and] that joy that she showed us, that light that she was, and we always want to keep that going with us,” De Silva said.
