Delaware Energy Soultions Act has Passed
Senate Bill 265
DELAWARE – Senate Bill 265– also known as the Delaware Energy Solutions Act has successfully passed in the State Senate. The Nature Conservancy of Delaware voiced its support and noted how, important this is to the fight against climate change.
The Bill sets up a wind procurement process for Delaware – to start adding offshore wind to its power grid. “In order to be able to purchase offshore wind, we needed this bill… Delaware needs offshore wind because the competition is just too high for so many different kinds of clean energy now…” says Emily Knearl External Affairs Advisor for The Nature Conservancy of Delaware.
The Conservancy has pushed forward other bills in the past, hoping to fight climate change. “Last year, House Bill 99 set up clean energy goals, greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, for the state of Delaware. To meet those targets, we need to add offshore wind… Previously, one of the ways that Delaware has been meeting greenhouse gas emission reduction targets is through purchasing wind from western Pennsylvania. But so many states have set these targets now, and there’s so much competition… If we want to reduce greenhouse gasses, and hopefully, reduce the impacts of climate change- sea level rise, unstable weather, that kind of thing, we need to be using more clean energy, and not using as many fossils fuels.”
Executive Director of The Nature Conservancy, Lori Brennan also made a public statement. She said offshore wind is an important tool and they support projects that avoid potential impacts to habitat and species as they work to build a cleaner, greener future for all of Delaware.
