Bennett holds ceremony for Sang Ho Baek

SALISBURY, Md. -It was an emotional day at James M. Bennett High School Monday as the Clippers honored and remembered the late Sang Ho Baek prior to their regular season finale.

Baek got that final punchout in 2019 as Bennett won the 3A state championship in baseball. Sang went to George Mason where he tragically lost his life while undergoing Tommy John surgery, a loss felt across the region.

We saw teammates from the 2019 championship team make their way on the field to take part in the tribute. Another who was on hand was co-head coach of that championship team, Jesse Serig.

“This is a tough question, Sang was an awesome kid, and so I’ve been thinking about him knowing that this event was coming. I’ve been thinking about him a lot in the last week or two. I always come back to his demeanor. He was polite and kind, and cool under pressure. He was also really funny, and smart, and humble,” Serig remembered. “I think we’ve done a good job, I hope, at remembering him. Putting some things in place like this to help that memory and that legacy continue… He was certainly a leader that these kids and future kids should certainly remember and look up to.”

Serig told us more about what Bennett has done to keep Baek’s memory and legacy alive including a memorial scholarship in his honor.

The scholarship will be awarded for the third time at the Clippers senior awards next week.

Bennett athletes with a 3.5 GPA or higher qualify.
