Worcester Co. commissioners, community members discuss future of Buckingham Elementary School

WORCESTER COUNTY, Md. – A room of Worcester County community members anxiously waited to hear the proposed build plans for Buckingham Elementary.
The board of education and county commissioners came together to hear the ideas from the Interagency Committee on school Construction.
“I think learning how to increase the ask, and balance it out with our budgets, will sort of help this project. It’s good to see some revelations happening today,” said community member, Tony Weeg.
the IAC presented four different ways to tackle the project. Despite differing opinions on each, district Superintendent, Lou Taylor, said the focus has been and will always be enhancing Buckingham Elementary school for current and future students.
“I’m hoping we can get together rather quickly and make some decisions for Buckingham Elementary School,” Taylor said. “The bottom line is, we want the approval to do Buckingham Elementary School. That community needs it, that community deserves it, and certainly we all believe that that’s our priority.”
Commissioners were pressed with questions about each scenario. Chief administrative officer, Weston Young, said it will take all hands on deck to bring any one of the plans to fruition, ensuring the $50 million in committed county funding is spent wisely.
“There’s pros and cons with all four [options] and that’s something the commissioners and IAC would ultimately discuss. At the local level, the board of education needs to get on the same page and see some of the later solutions that have significant money attached to it,” Young said.
