Portion of Assateague Island temporarily closed for emergency construction

BERLIN, Md. – A portion of Assateague Island National Seashore is temporarily closed for construction.

We’re told the Bayside Parking Area, Bayside Beach, and Bayside Picnic Area are closed to all visitors, including vehicular, watercraft, and foot traffic.

Staff will be doing emergency shore stabilization work and changing the configuration of the parking area. Additionally, Assateague Island Outfitters will move the location of their concession building.

This area is vulnerable to storm, tide, and wind events, and has been badly eroded over the past few winters. Erosion over the last few months has caused major damage to the parking lot and is not threatening the concession building.

The closure began on Monday and work is expected to take approximately two weeks, work and weather dependent. All other areas of Assateague Island National Seashore remain open as normal.
