DOVER, Del. – On Sunday, the early morning hours were disrupted by the sounds of gunfire on Delaware State University’s campus.

When Delaware State University’s police arrived on the scene they found one victim. “They responded to the scene and located an 18-year-old victim who received treatment on the scene and was then transported to Bay Health Kent campus where she sadly died of her injuries,” said Master Corporal Ryan Schmid, with the Dover Police Department.

The victim is not a registered DSU student. Master Corporal Ryan Schmid says an incident like this, happening in one of the residence halls is out of the ordinary. However, his agency along with university police are working hand in hand to bring a suspect to justice. “They’ve got cameras entry control points and things like that that we might not necessarily have access to firsthand so really just relying on them and having a partnership to work together to ensure that this gets solved quickly,” said Master Corporal Ryan Schmid.

As students prepare to go back to class this week, Master Corporal Schmid has a message for the DSU community: “Our main priority is the student’s safety and security, so we’re going to continue to work with DSU like we have been recently to ensure that their safety and security are number one and that they can have a safe environment to attend classes.”

The school says the suspect was last seen running away in the direction of College Road. This investigation is ongoing, police ask if you know anything or have any tips that you call Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333.

Classes are canceled for April 22, 2024.
