SALISBURY, Md. – The gift of a secure place to call home? It’s hard to put a price tag on that.

Habitat for Humanity is paying it forward for the 88th time to one local woman.

“She’s building generational wealth for her future, which is fantastic. Who wouldn’t want that? Every mortgage payment is adding to her net worth,” said Habitat for Humanity executive director, Molly Hilligoss.

Renette Marcelin now has a brand-new place to call home, with a spacious bedroom for her son and a front yard to make new memories on.

“With interest rates having gone up so much, home ownership is out of reach for so many families,” Hilligoss said. “With our program, we ensure that their monthly payment won’t exceed 30% of their income.”

Renette and her son are joining the already large population of Hatian individuals on Delmarva.

NAACP president, Monica Brooks said empowering one individual to seek resources like these will have a ripple effect on the entire community.

“What better way to make a neighborhood more beautiful than encouraging home ownership?” Brooks said.

Looking forward to all that’s to come for this family, Brooks said Friday marked the first day of the new homeowner’s life.

“It’s the beginning of something great. The seeds that are being planted today are going to have so much fruit that are going to go to these families, and the security they’re going to have, the joy, the togetherness, the safety, the security of home ownership,” Brooks said.
