Weather Tidbits: The Seasons

This Weather Tidbits will discuss why we have seasons throughout the year. The two big factors that work in tangent to cause our seasons are the revolution of the earth around the sun and the tilt of the earth’s axis. The seasons split into the Vernal Equinox (also known as the first day of Spring), the Summer Solstice, the Autumnal Equinox, and the Winter Solstice. If the earth revolved without it’s axis at a tilt, the sun would always shine directly toward the equator with both hemispheres receiving about 12 hours of daylight every day. This is already the case with the Vernal and Autumnal Equinox. The tilt of the earth’s axis ensures that both hemispheres will receive a different distribution of sunlight for the Summer and Winter seasons.
