Teen arrested after stealing car, causing multiple crashes in Dover

DOVER, Del. – Police have charged a 17-year-old following multiple car accidents in the Dover area Sunday evening.

At around 4:45 p.m., officers responded to the area of Verizon on North DuPont Highway for a report of a crash involving several vehicles, one of which was reportedly overturned. When officers arrived at the scene, they met with a 17-year-old male, who was determined to be the driver of the overturned vehicle.

Further investigation revealed that the teen had stolen the vehicle from the unit block of Commerce Way and proceeded to drive the vehicle through the City of Dover. Police say at some point before the crash at Verizon, the teen got into another accident in the Town Point development involving a parked car. The teen reportedly fled from the scene and committed multiple traffic violations, leading to the crash at Verizon, which damaged the building and multiple vehicles. The driver of another vehicle involved in the Verizon accident was taken to a nearby hospital for their injuries.

Officers say the teen initially resisted arrest but was eventually taken into custody after a brief struggle. He was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, leaving the scene of a property collision, reckless driving, driving without a valid license, third degree vehicular assault, and other related offenses, and was released to a guardian.
