Second suspect arrested in connection to shooting at Sussex Central basketball game
GEORGETOWN, Del. – Police have arrested a second suspect in connection to a shooting at a Sussex Central High School basketball game last week.
Shortly before 9 p.m. on February 27th, troopers assigned to Sussex Central High School were on duty for a basketball game when they learned of gunfire in the vicinity. Troopers subsequently found multiple shell casings in the parking lot, but no injuries were reported.
Troopers were able to identify a 15-year-old student as the suspect in this incident. Further investigation revealed that the teen shot at a vehicle that was traveling southbound on Patriots Way after leaving the parking lot of the school. The 15-year-old then reportedly fled the scene in a Jeep Cherokee, driven by a man identified as 19-year-old Gerod Sturgis. It was also learned that the Howard T. Ennis School, across from Sussex Central High School, was also hit by gunfire during the incident. The 15-year-old was subsequently charged with four felony counts of first degree reckless endangerment and criminal mischief, and remains at the Stevenson House Detention Center.
Sturgis was taken into custody on February 29th and charged with possession of a firearm in a safe school zone, second degree conspiracy, and hindering prosecution. He was held at SCI on a $6,000 secured bond.
