Salisbury Police Department warns against targeted scam calls

SALISBURY, Md. – Scammers are getting even more creative with how they carry out their scams.

The Salisbury Police Department is warning against scams in which criminals are spoofing the department’s phone number and portraying themselves as an SPD officer.

Once a call recipient is targeted, they tell them they are under investigation by Homeland Security.

In a statement to 47abc, Captain Ryan Koerner said it doesn’t seem as if the scammers are making these calls for financial gain.

“The caller did not request any type of financial compensation, which is unusual for when people receive these types of spoof calls. No one has been defrauded, that we are aware of,” Captain Koerner said.

The department urges anyone who may think they have been scammed to contact the police department at 410-548-3165.
