Local resource fair offers free breast exams to Delaware community
BLADES, Del. – Over a dozen local organizations made their way to Blades School in Delaware to offer free resources to the community, and one of them could save a life.
Event organizer, Brentdy Chavez, said meeting residents where they are is crucial in ensuring they get the care that they need.
“We have a lot of client families who live out here and they don’t have transportation, so I said I’m going to bring all the resources to you,” Chavez said.
At the event, the Amerihealth mobile clinic offered free breast exams to women. Family nurse practitioner, Ana Vargas, said offering the exams at no cost is the first step to early detection.
“You find something that’s abnormal or not quite right with your breast exam, then that’s the first step and then you’re going to go to your primary doctor or your nurse practitioner and get checked and get an order for an ultrasound and mammogram if needed,” Vargas said.
And being bilingual helps break the language barrier, so patients are more comfortable approaching a health care provider.
“I like being bilingual because I can target my Hispanic population,” Vargas said. “Even though I bring my services to anybody, anybody here is welcome free services through the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, being able to communicate in Spanish is an open door.”
