Good Morning Delmarva discusses brain injury awareness month

47ABC – March is National Brain Injury Awareness Month and Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month here in Maryland.

It’s a time to show support for those who have experienced a brain injury and may need some extra help.

The Executive Director of the Brain Injury Association of Maryland, Bryan Pugh, tells us a brain injury is caused by a blow to the head, stroke, major bleed, or bruise in the brain.

One of the most common causes of brain injuries is falls.

Many people get brain injuries from falling when they are very young and learning how to walk or when they are much older and their balance changes.

He also says brain injuries are pretty common and there are many people on Delmarva who have experienced it.

In fact, Maryland alone has thousands of people with brain injuries.

Pugh tells us a brain injury can even lead to depression in some cases.

And there are long-term effects that could require forms of therapy and treatment.

He says it’s important you don’t become isolated and create a support system. They emphasize that you are not alone.

The Brain Injury Association has support group access so those who have experienced a brain injury can meet others who have dealt with it too.

There will also be many events throughout Maryland for the Month so to learn more — please visit www.biamd.org
