Closing arguments submitted for Sussex Central Administrator accused of inappropriate meme

Sussex Central High School

DELAWARE – An update was released on Monday regarding the case of a Sussex Central High School Administrator accused of circulating an inappropriate image of a student.

The attorneys of Dr. Bradley Layfield released their closing statements in their defense via a press release. The hearing reportedly concluded on February 15th, however, it claims that the school district did not want the defense to make their closing statements.

One of the major focal points of the closing arguments was the fact that on the night prior to the hearing conclusion, the charge accusing Layfield of creating and circulating an offensive meme of that student, had been dropped, claiming that Layfield was in no way responsible for either of those actions, and that it was committed by another school administrator.

The statement also calls for the Superintendent of the Indian River School District Dr. Jay Owens to step down, claiming that he allowed multiple members of his staff to watch surveillance footage of students at Sussex Central having sex in a stairwell on campus.

The expectation is that a judge will make a decision on how to move forward in this case sometime next week. If moved forward, the school board will have to make a vote concerning this case.

The Indian River School District released the following statement to 47 ABC Tuesday morning:

“Per the Indian River School District’s legal counsel: Dr. Layfield’s press release on Monday perpetuates disproven narratives and character assassinations. Citizens attended the hearing on February 15, 2024. The District presented live witnesses under oath, who contradicted him. He did not testify or call live witnesses. This case is ending where it began, with Dr. Layfield repeating narratives that are unsworn and unsupported.”
