Proposed improvements to juvenile justice system in Maryland

Annapolis, Md- On Wednesday January 31st, Maryland Governor Wes Moore and other state lawmakers announced a new plan that looks to improve the juvenile justice system in the state.

This new legislation which was crafted by Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee Chair Senator Will Smith and House Judiciary committee chair Delegate Luke Clippinger looks to approve outcomes for children involved in the DJS with a focus on three pillars: accountability, rehabilitation, and collaboration.

Some of the changes that are being proposed in this new legislation, known as Senate Bill 744, include jurisdiction expansion for DJS to include those under the age of 13 for firearms related offenses, car thefts, third degree sexual assault offenses, and animal abuse.

Additionally the bill looks to ensure participation in rehabilitation by allowing courts to extend probation if there have been multiple unexcused absences, or to simply make sure that children are participating and receiving necessary services.

Lastly senate bill 744 looks to require written documentation of all children who are taken into custody by police.
