Princess Anne couple opens new boxing gym

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – It’s been a long time coming for Carmelo and Julia Guerrero, finally seeing their dream of owning a boxing gym come to life.

A veteran boxer himself, Guerrero wanted to spread his love for the sport, to the younger generation in his community.

“I decided to say, you know, ‘I’m not fighting anymore, and I’m going to continue that road and train some young kids that are interested in learning how to defend themselves,” Guerrero said.

Since the age of 15, Guerrero has been perfecting his techniques in the ring.

While boxing may be a combat sport, the trainer is more interested in sharpening kids’ disciplinary skill, teaching them the differences between healthy and unhealthy fights.

“The art that I teach, now, is more of how to be self-aware and how to take care of yourself when a situation arises, that you have to present a form of self-defense,” Guerrero said.

Throughout the journey, Guerrero looks forward to seeing her husband knock out each round of opportunity.

“I love watching him in his element, mentoring the youth of this area, it’s really where he shines,” Guerrero.
