Discarded smoking materials cause house fire in Ocean Pines

OCEAN PINES, Md. – The Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office investigated a residential structure fire in Ocean Pines Saturday evening.

Ocean Pines Volunteer Fire Department received reports of a structure fire on Raft Road where fire fighters say worked to swiftly contain the fire to a screened porch, kitchen and the attic area of the home.

Deputy fire marshals determined the fire originated on the rear of the home from improperly discarded smoking materials in a plastic bucket.

Properly working smoke alarms are credited with early notification to the occupants of an emergency in the home allowing them to evacuate safely.
