Crisfield high school offering resources to students, parents, with hopes of increasing academic success

CRISFIELD, Md. – Crisfield high school is just starting to offer holistic services to both students and their parents.

Food, housing and mental health resources are made possible through a concentration of poverty grant. The funding will make such services easily accessible to the 373 students at Crisfield high.

Community school liaison, Marlena Turner, said when students don’t have to worry about the essentials, they can focus on their education.

“The healthier a family is physically, mentally, holistically, with food and adequate housing and other resources, the better a student will be able to come in and focus in on their academics, and not worry about those things going on,” Turner said.

District concentration of poverty coordinator, Dr. Dot Bell Jackson, said taking advantage of these resources will allow students to take their academic careers into their own hands,
and be more prepared for what’s waiting for them, after high school.

“What we’re doing is taking that community centered approach and connecting the school and the community, to help our students to succeed,” Dr. Bell Jackson said.

“Studies show that students who have improved attendance, they have improved outcomes with behavior and academics, so they’re going to be more likely to perform better on assessments and they’re going to be better prepared for college or a career in work force,” Dr. Dot Bell added.
