Black History Month Spotlight: Wicomico NAACP Branch 7028
WICOMICO COUNTY, Md.- As part of our Black History Month coverage, we’re putting the spotlight on the Wicomico County NAACP Branch 7028.
The local chapter was founded back in 1944. Their mission is to fight for equality and help advance policies and practices to expand human and civil rights for all people of color.
President Monica Brooks, who’s been in office now just over a year, told us they’ve been able to form other chapters of NAACP in the prison system, help with voter registration, fight for fair housing, and work with lawmakers to draft legislation. “Since my tenure, we as an executive committee decided we wanted to make sure that the community knew exactly who we were. We wanted to make sure they knew what we’re about. We have taken the bull by the horns,” Brooks said.
Brooks told 47ABC they can’t do what they do without the help of volunteers.
