Two moms work to tackle birthing disparities through new doula center
DOVER, Del. – Two moms looking to make a difference in pregnant women’s lives brought a much-needed resource to Dover.
It’s called the Growth: Family Resource Center, a home base for doulas across the First State.
After her own birthing experience, founder Erica Allen knew it was time to catch up with the times and create a space where women can empower other women.
“With myself being 8 months postpartum, there was a lot that was needed, even after having my baby,” Allen said.
“I felt kind of secluded, if you will. I didn’t feel like I had the support, so even with the support groups we’ll be offering here, we hope to bring together the community, and come through when access is needed,” Allen added.
Facing similar experiences, Allen, and her friend, Gabi LaSalle, brought their passion project to life. LaSalle wanted to turn hard times into a valuable lesson for pregnant women and their families.
“When you go through postpartum, it’s really hard to explain that feeling,” LaSalle said. “We want to make sure that all those warning signs, people are aware of that, because it really does help people get support before it’s too late.”
With those experiences, the pair aims to eliminate birthing disparities that women may face.
“We’re not the end all be all to eliminating birth disparities, we’re a piece to the puzzle,” Allen said. “It takes everyone to gather together, and we’re doing our part. We hope by doing our part, we’ll help everybody learn to do theirs.”
As the moms celebrate the beginning of their journey together, LaSalle hopes every mom who walks through their doors, leaves with a wealth of knowledge, and a connection to other mothers in their circle.
“A sense of community and not feeling like they have to go through this process alone,” LaSalle said. “Feeling supported, but mainly feeling like they have an opportunity to thrive and not just survive throughout the process.”
