Tenants of Bradford House Apartments say the complex is unlivable
CAMBRIDGE, Md. – Tenants of the Bradford House Apartments have had enough after years of “deplorable conditions”, the building owners also have received complaints from the city of Cambridge and Shore Legal Access.
Residents at Bradford Housing Apartments say they are scared to go outside at night because of the lack of security, and that is one of the many issues at this housing complex.
One tenant said “Its not livable at all, period.”
Tenants met with Shore Legal Access Friday to discuss ongoing resident concerns about security that they say have continued to go unaddressed.
Parks Abbot is one of the resident who is second guessing his safety.
“We need security bad, I mean… it’s awful,” Abbot said. “My niece, she got raped here.”
Thomas Greenleaf has lived in the complex for five years.
“I walk around with something on me everywhere I go.”
He told 47Abc that he previously volunteered as personal security for the building for several months, but security is not the only major issue at Bradford apartments.
“Having nothing been done in five years I have lived here. Waiting on blinds for five years, waiting on screens,” Greenleaf said.
Greenleaf believes the new manager for the building has been doing all that she can with the resources she has, but it still is not enough.
He says he blames the company that owns the property, Millenia.
“It’s not the manager, it’s the person over top of them, they can only do so much.”
Lawyers with shore legal access are trying to help residents work out a plan to improve their living situations.
Executive Director Meredith Girard is just one of people fighting for the tenants’ rights.
We have been doing everything we can to help these tenants, and we think it is time for Millenia Property Management to be held accountable.
Girard says Millenia has been benefiting from housing and urban development contracts, but not following through on their commitments.
Cambridge code enforcement adding to that evidence and citing recurring code violations.
“Mainly with security doors that open and let people in.”
“The hallways filled with feces and urine.”
Girard says enough is enough.
“If we can’t get relief from Millenia, we have to take it upon ourselves as a community to make sure folks get what they need.”
Managers of the Bradford Housing Apartments property sent 47abc a statement, which said they were committed to providing residents with “safe, decent, and sanitary housing.”
They also said they’re aware of resident concerns and claim they have made 300,000 dollars in repairs at the property since buying it in 2022.
They also blamed the residents themselves for the condition of the property saying they are unwilling to let management conduct inspections and address various issues.
Also claiming that “resident behavior has repeatedly resulted in the need to repair and replace security features.”
