Seaford PD to add new surveillance cameras with hopes of increasing community safety
SEAFORD, Del. – If you’re driving through Seaford and happen to look up, you may see one of the 80 License Plate Recognition cameras that are specked throughout the city.
Seaford’s Deputy Chief, Michael Rapa, said those are there to help the officers pinpoint crimes, easier.
“If an incident happens and we don’t get tag numbers, we don’t even have a description of the car, with the LPR, we can narrow the search down, which will help us provide better service to the community,” Deputy Chief Rapa said.
Over the next two years, grant funding from the HELP Initiative will help provide five additional cameras to various areas across Seaford. Deputy Chief Rapa said this pilot launch will help other Delaware communities adopt the safety measure.
“If this works great, then this is the blueprint for the HELP Initiative to go to other jurisdictions and towns and help them with that initiative,” Deputy Chief Rapa said.
And looking ahead, Deputy Chief Rapa warns those coming to Seaford with bad intentions to think twice.
“If you come in and want to commit a crime, we’re going to have either your tag or video of the incident to help us do our job,” Deputy Chief Rapa said.
