Salisbury University uses financial boost to enhance freshmen experience

SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury University is working to enhance the first-year experience for students, with a new grant.

The U.S. Department of Education approved a nearly $4 million grant that will be disbursed to the university, over the next four years.

Provost and Vice President of academic affairs, Laurie Couch, said Salisbury University will be able to help first year students, by training peer mentors, who will help them navigate through their first year of college.

“We’re in the business of trying to make sure that students are successful,” Couch said. “Honestly, we want to do anything to help them move along and achieve the goals that they have.”

The funds have already been granted to the university, and Couch added they should have data on whether or not the initiative is working for students in about two years.
