Newton Community Center set to receive garden bed, gives local children chance to grow fresh

SALISBURY, Md. – The Newton Street Community Center will soon have their very own garden bed, allowing children in their afternoon and summer programs the opportunity to grow fresh veggies.

It will be located just steps away from the center at the Camden Community Garden. The center recently installed a commercial kitchen, giving the greater community a space to cook.

Community of Joy Pastor Martin Hutchinson, who started the garden, told us this has been nearly a decade in the making. He added that the garden will also give area children a place to make an impact right where they live. “We won’t be growing, harvesting, weeding or any of that. They’ll be doing it all and that’s the cool thing,” Hutchinson said.

“If they start from an early age, they can go looking for these opportunities where they can grow as they’re growing,” SBY Community Program Coordinator Logan Dillion said.

Hutchinson said by the end of month, they will start purchasing seeds and other materials for the garden bed.

The garden bed is expected to be in full service in late spring.

To give to the garden bed, you can send a check to Community of Joy Church and earmark it for Camden Community Garden.
