New bill seeks to keep violent offenders behind bars

MARYLAND. – Maryland lawmakers are thinking about community safety.

The Safe Communities Act of 2024 looks to ensure violent offenders serve the full duration of their sentence.

State Senator, Mary Beth Carozza said she hopes the legislation will help reduce violent crimes, citing the murder of Baltimore resident, Para LaPere.

She said her killer was released early after receiving diminution credits in prison.

“Those who are convicted of violent crimes really need to serve a certain minimum of time, not use these diminution credits to be released early,” Senator Carozza.
