Making magic sand on Good Morning Delmarva

47ABC – STEM Educator Brad Hartle was back on Good Morning Delmarva recently to show us another kid-friendly science experiment!

This time Brad showed Jordie how to make Magic Sand!

The experiment is really easy and can be done at home. It can get a bit messy so you may need to do this in an area that can be easily cleaned.

Here’s a step-by-step guide for doing this experiment.

Materials:

Play Sand

Water Repellant Spray (Water Repellant Fabric Spray)

Disposable Plate or Container

Disposable Spoon or Fork

Well Ventilated Area

Water

Container to hold the water

Step-by -Step:

Note: Keep spray away from face, do not eat sand, wash hands thoroughly after use.

1) Pour a layer of sand on disposable plate or container. Spread out evenly.

Before Spraying sand make sure you are in a well-ventilated area, as some of the sprays have a strong smell!

2) Spray sand with the water repellant spray until the sand looks moist

3) Use a plastic spoon or fork to mix the sand.

4) Apply a second coat of spray to the sand.

5) Place the sand somewhere to dry (make sure it is away from animals or small children)

6) Once the sand is dry, you can test fill your water container up.

7) Place a spoonful of sand in the water.

If the sand does not clump together like it did during Jordie and Brad’s experiment, than you may need to repeat steps 2-5.

8) Have Fun! Now, you have magic sand!

You can store it in a plastic baggie or container.
