SALISBURY, Md.- Calling all writers! Wor-Wic Community College is looking for you as their ‘Beacon of Hope’ poetry contest is now underway.

The contest comes as the Beacon of Hope statue is temporarily installed in downtown Salisbury. Organizers told us the goal was to honor the life of trailblazer and underground railroad conductor Harriet Tubman.

Those poems will be read at a reception ceremony honoring Tubman on Friday, January 26th. That event will include a variety of speakers, student writers, and other special guests.

The contest is open to students from participating high schools and former and current Wor-Wic students. “Thats why we’re having that poetry contest being shared here on campus because we want to take the time to listen to those feelings in a collective group where everyone can hear and share. Hopefully it inspires conversation,” Wor-Wic Assistant Professor and Cultural Diversity Committee Member Tiffany Kotra-Loos said.

Entries are being accepted until midnight Friday, January 12th.

Organizers told us prizes will be given to the selected winners.
