Environmental concerns, lack of resources big focuses for upcoming listening session in Crisfield

CRISFIELD, Md. An upcoming listening session is calling for resident input in Crisfield. Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake tell us they’re an environmental organization focused on engaging with faith communities on how to make change.

They look to tackle various environmental issues from pollution, transportation, access to food, and more. Advocacy Coordinator Antoinette Rucker told 47ABC that what they do is also centered around education, informing the community of need-to-know information and connecting them with legislators. “We hold these ‘Listen, Lead, Share’ sessions and engage with the community. We actually go through steps of the legislative process and environmental initiatives that they can participate in,” Rucker said.

As for Crisfield, a big focus of that meeting will be on the lack of availability to area resources. Severe weather impacts, which often involves major flooding and other concerns, will also big points of discussion. “EPA is planning a flood mitigation plan with FEMA BRIC. That’s also going to be with TNC Nature Conservancy. A lot of information may already be going around with the community about that so this will be an opportunity for them to voice their opinions,” Rucker said.

The group hopes that by bringing the community together it will help them play a crucial role in the decision-making process.

IPC is partnering with the Maryland Environmental Justice Collaborative to host the event.

The session will take place next Wednesday, February 7th from 6-7:30p.m. at the Crisfield Public Library.
