DelDOT crews working to keep roads safe in the midst of the storm

DOVER, Del. – DelDOT crews are out and about tonight working to keep roads safe as the storm rolls through Kent and Sussex Counties.

Delaware transportation officials are actively working to identify and close roads that have been impacted by the storm.

Multiple areas across both Kent and Sussex Counties are seeing more than an inch of rain along with incredible wind gusts reaching upwards of 50 miles per hour as the storm continues to impact much of the Delmarva Peninsula.

DelDOT Director of Community Relations C.R. McLeod tells 47 ABC News that crews are being cautious and trying to block off streets that have debris instead of trying to clear them in order to keep their personnel safe.

“We have dozens of trees down in Kent and Sussex County,” McLeod explained. “Our crews are already responding. We are being very cautious though because of the high winds of having crews going out and actually working to remove trees. If there are other trees around we are actually holding back and just putting up barriers right now and coning off because we’ve got to keep our people safe.”

While flooding remains a concern across the area as a result of the heavy rain from the storm, as of early Tuesday evening, McLeod says DelDOT is not seeing an extreme level of flooding at this time.

“We have not seen a large flooding impact as of yet, but again, we are expecting to see those local waterways begin to really reach their peaks in the early morning hours of Wednesday,” McLeod said. “It’s really a night to stay in if you don’t have to be out, but for those who have to be out on the roads, really just use a lot of caution.”

If you have to be out in tonight’s storm, it’s vitally important that you use extreme caution and remain aware of your surroundings. If you approach standing water or flooding conditions, do not take your chances, turn around and find an alternate route of travel.
