Traffic stop leads to DUI, stolen firearm charges for man in Laurel

1280 Serviss

LAUREL, Del. –

Shortly after midnight Saturday, multiple Laurel Police patrol cars were reportedly stopped on the shoulder of northbound Sussex Highway in the area of County Seat Highway, with their emergency lights active, as officers worked to investigate an unrelated complaint. While on the side of the road, officers say a vehicle passed the location in the right lane while maintaining highway speeds and not moving over as required by Delaware law.

An officer was able to leave the scene and caught the vehicle, initiating a traffic stop. It was determined that the driver, 37-year-old Joshua Serviss, had an active warrant for a domestic violence incident a few days prior. It was also determined that the driver was under the influence of alcohol, with a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit to drive a vehicle.

The vehicle was impounded, and a search led officers to find a firearm concealed next to the center console, which was found to be reported stolen by the Ocean City Police Department in Maryland.

Serviss was charged with receiving a stolen firearm, concealed carry of a deadly weapon, DUI, traffic offenses, and Laurel PD domestic violence warrant charges. As he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, Serviss was held at SCI on an intoxication hold and was released the next day after posting a secured bond.
