Local family hits the streets to celebrate year 10 of Adopt A Block tradition

SALISBURY, Md. – Adopt A Block volunteer, Mark Thompson spent Christmas Day giving back. He went to 12 houses, dropping off Christmas gifts to families in his community.

“It makes it special on Christmas, when you show up,” Thompson said.

In the morning, Thompson and his family gathered around their Christmas tree to open gifts. By the afternoon, they hit the streets, going door to door with toys and books for kids in need.

Thompson said it’s a tradition that brings light to a neighborhood that’s seen darkness in the past.

“We start off at Church Street because 10 years ago, this had one of the highest drug and crime rates, so we wanted to go [and] change the atmosphere,” Thompson said. “We want more people to catch on fire to us and adopt areas of their community, to show the love and be a true family.”

After 10 years, Thompson’s wife, Felicia Thompson, still looks forward to the smiles on the kids’ faces when they see their new presents.

“We love going out and spreading love, because sometimes, this is the only Bible that they see,” Thompson said.

Following in his father’s footsteps, David Thompson wants to continue spreading holiday cheer through Adopt A Block, so he can strengthen the relationships he’s built in the community.

“It’s something that I’ve grown to be more passionate about,” Thompson said. “I definitely enjoy seeing the smiles on their faces, so it’s definitely something that I enjoy doing today. It’s Christmas Day, so spread a little bit of extra joy and cheer.”
