Large tree not returning to Salisbury City Park this year due to safety issues, officials say
SALISBURY, Md. – City of Salisbury officials say the big tree that has stood in the City Park as part of the Wonderland of Lights will not return due to safety issues.
We’re told that parts are no longer made for the three and the deterioration is not fiscally responsible to repair.
“Unfortunately, time and the elements have not been kind to the tree and after taking stock of the condition this year it was clear that it could not be installed,” said Mayor Randy Taylor. “However, I look forward to the planning for next year’s holiday season and engaging the community and businesses to help put together a great experience.”
The tree was purchased from Ocean City back in 2017.
ABCD took over management of the lights this year and has made it their mission to relight as many of the older displays as possible. Officials say 2,600 bulbs were purchased and more than 400 feet of electrical wiring were repairs, with more than 500 man hours spent repairing and placing the displays. Additionally, Delmarva Christmas Lights, a locally owned business, has donated time and lights to illuminate some trees in the City as well as the park’s iconic bridge for the past six years.
In 2006, the Wonderland of Lights Fund was established with the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, with the purpose of supporting the cost of the display at the park. The fund was reportedly been inactive since 2018.
