“Healing isn’t a straight line:” Experts offer tips to tackle New Year’s Resolutions with ease
DELMARVA – Getting fit, becoming financially free, and eating better are amongst the top goals for Americans heading in 2024 according to a recent survey by Forbes Health and OnePoll.
1,000 U.S. adults were surveyed with data being collected back in October 2023.
Tanyell Moore with TidalHealth Nanticoke said improving your diet can start with something as simple as how you snack. “A lot of times where we go off track is that we stop and grab sodas, chips, and other snacks that fulfills just a little hunger before dinner,” Moore said. “Instead, snack on your carrots, apples, and grapes. Also, make sure if you have things like pretzels that you’re only having a couple of them. You should also be maintaining the portion sizes of your snacks.”
For those with lives on the go but still looking to incorporate more fruits and veggies, Moore said the gadgets in your kitchen will be a big help. “That’s why I say that Ninja machine will be your best friend because that way you’re going to grind all those veggies and mix a few berries with it so that way you can get a sweet taste with your veggies also,” she said.
That same survey also found that 36% of participants want to take control of their mental health.
Registered Psychology Associate under the Supervision of Dr. Samantha Scott Heather Brown told 47ABC that depression, anxiety, and life stressors often lead most to seek help. “Because they can help either give you techniques which include relaxation techniques or even grounding techniques to help relieve some of that,” Brown said.
Fair warning, Dr. brown added that therapy takes a lot of work and dedication. She said you should go into the new journey with realistic expectations. “Healing isn’t a straight line. It’s all different kinds of curves and ups and downs,” Brown said. “Working with your therapist and being honest with your therapist about how you’re feeling or how certain topics are affecting you is key.”
Dr. Brown also said that therapy work doesn’t stop once the session ends. She recommends doing things like going for a walk, maintaining healthy relationships with family and friends, and exploring hobbies that make you happy.
TidalHealth Nanticoke officials also told us that you should consult your doctor before making any huge life changes, especially if you have other underlining health conditions.
That survey also found that losing weight was also a priority for participants heading into 2024.
