Colonel Richardson honors Merrill Morgan

FEDERALSBURG, Md.– The basketball court at Colonel Richardson high school has a new name on it- Merrill Morgan. Many came out last night to remember and honor the former head coach, and that is something his son Jeff Morgan was so happy to see.

“I do appreciate the community recognizes the impact that he had on peoples lives and enjoyed their experiences with him,” said Morgan.

Morgan coached the Colonels from 1967-2005. When he arrived at Colonel he wanted to bring change to the school and make sure no one was left out.
“He was frustrated when there wasn’t equal opportunities for everybody and I think what he wanted to do here is bring that opportunity for everybody and to create an environment that was fair for everybody,” said Morgan.

Even after Morgan stepped away from the game and put the whistle down, he never stopped being involved with his players.

“He always knew what they were doing, he kept tabs on everybody, he cared about everybody and wanted everybody to succeed,” said Morgan.

Current girls varsity basketball coach Tom Corsey played for Morgan and he knew that something like this would bring everyone out.

“When they said they were going to put that name in the court, I knew it was going to bring a lot of guys back and it’s an honor for me to be even walking around in that gym. It’s an honor for these guys to come back and see his name in that gym, so it will always be something special,” said Corsey.

Coach Morgan will always be apart of Colonel Richardson- and it is something that his son will always be grateful for.

“It’s just special, I’m kinda at loss for words but it was a special feeling to know that he is remembered in this way and he means so much to so many people,” said Morgan.
