Smyrna Eagles win 2023 DIAA Volleyball State Championship
NEWARK, Del.– The Smyrna Eagles take down Ursuline Red Raiders 3-1 to capture the 2023 DIAA Girls Volleyball State Championship.
The Smyrna Eagles make school and state history by becoming the first Henlopen Conference Team to win and appear in the state title. The Eagles finish the season 15-1 and become the new state champions.
“I mean, it doesn’t feel real. It’s crazy, we should’ve won and we did, but it still doesn’t feel real no matter how many times I say it. We have some of the best hitters in the state, clearly, and we put them to good use today,” said Smyrna Senior Volleyball Player Anna Richardson.
” These seniors have played together since they were at the middle school level and elementary school, and played club together. They just came into this season with the mindset of we want to go where we went last season and we want to go better than that. .. We’re honored, we’re humbled in terms of what this means for downstate teams to be able to say ‘Hey, now the door’s open.’ Somebody else can do this, not just Smyrna, Smyrna isn’t the only one. There’s really good teams in the conference, it’s been done. We’re happy we were the first, and we hope there’s going to be other Henlopen teams following right through,” said Smyrna Head Coach Daniel Wandless.
