EXCLUSIVE: Seaford City Councilman Matt MacCoy announces run for State Senate

SEAFORD, Del. – Seaford City Councilman Matt MacCoy is throwing his hat in the ring for Delaware State Senate.

In an exclusive interview with 47 ABC News, Councilman MacCoy announced Monday that he’s officially running to represent Delaware’s 21st Senatorial District.

“I don’t know how to be a politician, I don’t want to be a politician,” Councilman MacCoy said. “I’m a guy who grew up here and I want to see the best for the area.”

Having spent his entire life in Seaford, Councilman MacCoy tells us he knows first-hand how to serve the community and that it’s time the people have one of their own representing them in Dover.

“If anything has resonated with people, I think it’s that, it’s that this is just a guy,” Councilman MacCoy said of himself. “I can call Matt and he’s going to answer the phone. If I have a problem, Matt’s going to communicate with me, and if he doesn’t know the answer, he’s going to find out the answer.”

Councilman MacCoy says a top priority, if elected, would be finding ways to crack down on crime.

“I feel we need to get tougher on crime, and that’s not just lip service, that’s something we need to do,” Councilman MacCoy stressed. “People who used to feel safe in certain areas, now will say I don’t feel safe.”

So what would that look like? Councilman MacCoy says it starts with the consequences.

“Tougher and harsher penalties for people who are committing crimes,” Councilman MacCoy stated. “Additional resources for our local police department, our local fire department. It’s harder to be a police officer now, and a firefighter now, than it’s ever been.”

Councilman MacCoy currently serves as the Board President for the Western Sussex Boys and Girls Club. It’s where we met him for the interview. He says he see’s first hand how crucial it is that the community’s youth has a place to go and, when it comes to curbing crime among juveniles, the two go hand-in-hand.

“Since this club’s been open, the crime rate for juveniles has been down 75-percent,” Councilman MacCoy explained. “I want more of that type of impact, I want additional options for children.”

Councilman MacCoy says, if elected, he will lead with transparency and work hard to fight for the issues that matter to the people.

“What our residents want, what the community surrounding wants, I’m gonna bust my rear-end to go out and get it for them,” Councilman MacCoy emphasized. “That’s what I want to do and I’m going to be the same guy I’ve always been.”

Councilman MacCoy is running in the Republican primary against incumbent State Senator Bryant Richardson. Delaware’s primary election is set for Tuesday, September 10, 2024.
