Officials find 9-millimeter handgun in student’s backpack at Mardela Middle and High School

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md.- A school resource officer at Mardela Middle and High School found a 9-millimeter handgun in the backpack of a 13-year-old student.

Police said a fellow student had alerted them, before it was confiscated.

Captain Rich Wiersberg said the student’s quick thinking was the right decision.

“We’re proud to say that everything worked the way it was supposed to– the administrator and the SRO worked hand-in-hand, and a student came forward and notified us of what was going on,” Captain Wiersberg said. “We’re very proud of that student that was willing to come forward to let everyone know what was happening.”

The 13-year-old is being held pending a court appearance and has been charged with procession of a firearm and disturbing school operations.
