Local nonprofit feeds homeless ahead of Thanksgiving holiday
SALISBURY, Md. – Wednesday, nonprofit Highway 2 Hedges ‘Feed One, Teach One’ served up a hearty meal for the local homeless population ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
For Executive Director Janice Johnson, the day had a deeper meaning. “I’ve been on the same side of the people we’re serving today. I’ve been homeless and my story is similar to theirs,” Johnson said.
Along with turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, and of course cranberry sauce, people were also given hats and gloves to brave the cold weather.
Volunteer Sandra Allen said it’s something that those they’re serving won’t forget. “The people are so, so thankful. I mean they just tell us we really appreciate you ladies,” Allen said.
Providing a holiday treat and daily essentials is just the first step, as Johnson told 47 ABC WMDT she’s looking at the bigger picture. She said that’s helping them do a complete 360. “Trying to get them situated with housing, some of them jobs, and I.D.’s for some people that don’t have them. Some of these people don’t even have a place to take a bath,” Johnson said.
Through their work, Johnson said they’ve also been able to make strong connections with individuals they come in contact with which is at the heart of what they do. “It brings tears to my eyes. We even know their names, but we want to know more than your name. We want to know who you are and what brought you to the point,” she said.
On top of their holiday initiatives, the nonprofit also hosts bi-weekly food distributions. They’re currently in need of clothes, socks, gloves, shoes, and monetary donations. You can contact H2H at (443) 783-5393. You can also mail in donations at 409 Clyde Ave, Fruitland, Md.
