Local businesses gear up for Shop Small Business Saturday

SALISBURY, Md. – Gobbling up turkey, and big sales from retailers, are two things people are getting ready to do this weekend.

With Shop Small Business Saturday just around the corner, owner of Blackwater Apothecary, Nicole Blackwater, said the annual event gives many local businesses that big push they need, to get through the slower winter months.

“Shopping small on Small Business Saturday is the way to go, because it’s a gift to give to the community,” Blackwater said. “It’s so important for folks around here to shop local in order for us businesses to still be here, when winter is over.”

Like Blackwater, Nicole Rogers also owns a business in downtown Salisbury. Her ice cream shop, Two Scoop, slows down during colder months. So, offering holiday trinkets helps her sell, when people aren’t in the market for frozen treats.

“One of the good things about our ice cream shop is we sell gifts, so we stay open throughout the winter months,” Rogers said.

Seeing success last year, Rogers hopes that she, and other local shops downtown, make some extra cash from the event.

“Our goal is always to kind of double what we did our year before. It’s been a slower fall for us, so this Saturday is going to be really important for all of our local businesses,” Rogers said.
