Grant program supports installation of parklet spaces in Delaware communities

DELAWARE – Delawareans can expect increased pedestrian safety and enhanced community spaces thanks to grant funding.

The money comes from the Dover Kent Metropolitan Planning Organization‘s Parklet Pilot Program.  The goal is to help convert parking lots into accessible, open spaces for the community to enjoy.

The latest grant awardees are the Downtown Dover Partnership and Bowers Beach. Those projects will include the installation of new bike racks at both locations and a fix-it station in Bowers Beach’s main parking lot.

DKMPO Public Outreach Manager Helen Wiles said the projects will also have economic benefits. “That also increases traffic to those area business and restaurants. So, it’s good for residents, good for local businesses, and it’s good for the municipality,” Wiles said.

Wiles adds the total of both projects will cost just over $5,000.
