Final resolution announced in Anton Black case
MARYLAND – The Coalition of Justice for Anton Black and family members have announced their final resolution in the federal court litigation following the police killing of 19-year-old Anton Black in 2018.
The settlement will see both monetary compensation for Anton’s family, along with reforms to the State’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Some of those changes include the adoption of a new policy on how medical examiners handle deaths in police custody, specifically applying to all deaths involving law enforcement restraint, which will include those in facilities such as jails.
There will need to be increased measures of impartiality related to these examinations, along with additional reviews from medical officer officials prior to the release of autopsy reports. Medical examiners will need to present victims’ families with information pertaining to their rights to review and seek corrections for those autopsies.
